Envisaging the need to have a centrally located meeting place for youth from all across the world, the Indian Youth Centres Trust decided to build a youth centre, in 1960. Although the building plans were drawn up in 1962, the Indo-Chinese conflict which engulfed the sub-continent in October of that year caused unexpected delay in starting the construction of the building. The Indo-Pak war of 1965 caused some more delay. It was decided to proceed with the construction of the building in two stages. The first phase of Vishwa Yuvak Kendra building, comprising mainly the hostel and the central hall was completed and was inaugurated on 22nd December 1968 by Dr. Zakir Husain, the then President of India.

Ensconced in the highly secure diplomatic enclave of New Delhi, Vishwa Yuvak Kendra is a full-fledged campus within itself, and comprises of accommodation facilities, conference/ convention facilities, eating joints, library, lush lawns etc.  The campus also has space for showcasing artwork/craft exhibits.
